What is Sterilization?
Any process that effectively kills or eliminates transmissible agents (such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, spore forms, etc.) from a surface, equipment.
How much temperature and time is required to sterilize instruments?
To achieve sterility, a holding time of at least 15 minutes at 121 °C or 3 minutes at 134 °C is required. This treatment will inactivate all fungi, bacteria, viruses and also bacterial spores, which can be quite resistant. (Source: wikipedia.org)

What are the steps involved in sterilization process at Apex Dental Centre?
Step-1 : First we clean all the instruments thoroughly with hot water and then with spirit.
Step-2 : Hand-pieces and similar instruments are cleaned externally with spirit and internally with spray.
Step-3 : All instruments are kept in a ultrasonic cleaner to remove blood & fluid stains from inaccessible grooves. This is achieved using high frequency ultrasonic vibrations
Step-4 : All the cleaned equipment are sealed in a pouch. Each pouch contains set of instruments required for single patient.
Step-5 : All pouches sealed in step-3 are kept in autoclave. Autoclave is run for one cycle with parameters mentioned above. This ensures every corner of the instrument is sterilized.
Step-6 : After Autoclave cycle, sealed pouches are kept in a UV chamber till they are taken out for use. Ultraviolet rays in the chamber ensure that instruments remain in sterile condition when they are taken out for use on you.
